March 2008: Santorini buoy found seriously damaged

At the end of February 2008 the “Seawatch” type buoy which was deployed a few miles south of Santorini island, stopped sending data and its signal position was lost. Few days later, when the R/V Aegaeo visited the area during the scheduled network service, it was realized that the buoy had been shifted from its initial position. After communication with the local authorities the buoy was finally located in a rocky island north of Kassos, 80 km southeast of its anchored position. Unfortunately most of the instrumentation was lost or seriously damaged. Efforts are being made to recover the stored data.
